Intro to Leadlight Windows Weekend

Learn the lost art of creating a leadlight window, from pattern and glass selection, to glass cutting, breaking, and shaping, working with lead cames, and then soldering, puttying, and finishing your panel in our custom-built studio in our historic precinct in the Macedon Ranges.

The plan

Working with your choice of one of our pre-prepared patterns you will be shown all of the relevant skills including how to cut and shape glass pieces using glass cutters and glass grinders. Projects are kept to a manageable size and design so that you will be able to experience the whole process of creating a leadlight panel in the two days.

Before work on your panel can begin, you must learn the different ways to cut and shape glass and practice with some scrap. Next, it's time to choose your pattern and your tutor will go over the different aspects of glass selection, utilising not only colour but transparency and texture to create depth and interest in your finished piece. Now the real work of laying out your lead cames and shaping your glass begins. You will work your way through your panel with the assistance of your tutor before being taught how to solder your lead cames together on both sides of your laid out panel. Finally, you will putty, blacken and clean your finished leadlight window.

The class will run in two sessions to allow for the whole process to be explored.

Session 1: 10:30am- 3:30pm Saturday (includes break for lunch which is provided)

Session 2: 10:30am - until project is finished on Sunday

The fruits of your labour

Lunch will be provided on the first day using all local organic produce and we are happy to cater for any dietary requirements you may have. We also provide you with a divine afternoon treat and tea and coffee facilities are available throughout the course.

We anticipate that participants will be completed in time to check out one of our great local cafes for a late lunch on Sunday.

The kit required

The workshop costs include all materials required and all tools will be provided in the studio.

Leadlight By Ettore has been teaching Glass Arts in the Macedon Ranges for over 40 years. Specialising in many forms of glass arts the studio produces fused glass, copper-foiled and mosaic pieces as well as repairs and commissions of leadlight panels.

The studio is a multi-generational business with both Ettore and his daughter Rhain who together run term classes for 70+ adult students a week as well as weekend workshops and school holiday programs around their leadlight panel repairs and commissions.

The studio moved from their home studio in Woodend April 2017 to their new (larger) space in Studio 1, The Old Auction House, Kyneton. The current studio is fully heated and air-conditioned as well as being accessible.
